Boost and exotic fuels. The early 1980 Formula One engines were of 1.5 liter (91.5 cubic inches)(14 hp per cubic inch) displacement with turbos and very exotic fuel. These engines produced 1300 hp for qualifying (a grenade waiting to explode) and a reliable race life at 1100 hp. A top fuel engine averages 18.5 hp per cubic inch. |
