Condensation, I think.
Car had been sitting a while. The garage is not well sealed, if its humid outside it's humid inside. And it's a double garage, so sometimes another car comes in wet. Wednesday, we went for a run, up north 75 miles, the heater was on, and after 60 miles the gauges came back and are still working despite the car being parked out last night in a frost. I'm going to seal the garage a bit better, and put a dehumidifier in there. Anyway, it's fixed fttb. If they go off again, thankyou for that link to Tom's article. Ivor |

lol, i neglected to add the required capacitor on the output of the LM7805 on my old page about this. they don't regulate "well" without it, and under peculiar circumstances (tho not the peculiars of a Rambler dash) can oscillate. "well" probably doesn't matter compared to what's being replaced! maybe you noticed and were polite in not pointing it out! lol |

The link is for a 63-64 Classic, but the same applies to any car with the removable "can" regulator. The capacitor Tom mentions above "smooths out" the voltage output, but the old Stwart-Warner type gauges don't need it. The oscillating voltage of the original bi-metal regulator is anything but "smooth"!!
http://worldpowersystems.com/AMC/dashreg/ Starting in 67 the American had the regulator built into the temp gauge. This continued in the Hornet and Gremlin. All others (not sure about Pacer...) had the "can" type removable regulator through 76 or 77, when the gauge type was changed and a regulator no longer required (late models use straight 12VDC). You have to take the temp gauge apart to use a solid state regulator in the 67+ small cars. Tougher, but it has been done. Otherwise you have to replace the whole temp gauge unit. |

I would gladly pay for your services here. I need my gauges to work. Especially if its a "plug and play" upgrade.
