While we're waiting out the snow storm here today, I thought I'd try and find out what this device is used for. I've seen it on some pictures of other Javelins. It's not part of the wiring harness. Any Ideas?

Temperature sensor for one of the emission items?

TCS, transmission controlled spark. That sensor grounds at temp and opens a solenoid controlled vent to open vacuum to the atmosphere on the distributor advance. The vacuum vent switch is mounted on the coil bracket, and is round barrel shaped with an electrical plug and a nipple in the center for a vacuum line.

In late 73 there was two of them switches, one in the same mounting location as yours, and the other near the air guard system. Been too long since I had mine, to remember off hand.

Ps, something not right about the top picture... i think it is an optical illusion, but it looks like your upper grill support is mounted way up. Should be further down along the front. It's possible the support is just laying in a peculiar position.

Good eye on the grille tub. Actually it's just lying there in that pic.
So that sensor is not hooked up to the vacuum advance switch. And the 72' Javelin I have doesn't have it at all. Is that because it's a 4-speed?
Is that it next to the coil?

Yep lower left. This was used on automatics only.

Oddly, A/C cars did not have the electronic solenoid on the carb base on 71 or 72, which I remember on my 73.
