There was a short period early last year where I swapped out the stock 4.0L starter in my L6 build as it was experiencing a serious overheat risk with all the small changes and lots of cranking during testing. Reliable startup only works so much. Heatsoak doesn't hurt these engines like it does to big blocks but it takes the power of a heavy duty big block style starter just to get it rolling once the starter tries to puke.

You should never encounter the scenarios like I do because I do lots of intermittent test cranks, shut downs and restarts per hour. I'm not sure if it's worth it or not but I jumped on a discount MSD DynaForce starter (5094) in late 2015 and I've only had to bring it out during Summer tests. After the 4.0 starter began fuming. I'm still using the stock starter but it's a production unit where my start/stop habits have calmed down considerably. Summit doesn't carry this starter anymore and the only reviewer didn't like it as he had a 4.0L and this is suggested for all AMC L6 except the 4.0 so in his case he got a grand total of 6 months use out of it. It's a red powdercoated billet aluminum casing with a 4.40:1 reduction gear and a NICE onboard solenoid control. It works GREAT. The only issue I had was bolt length. I was using the stock starter bolts from a junker 4.0L in my build until I added the support bracer for my T-5 and then I had issues where the starter wanted to jump free of the engine. Make sure your hardware is locked down tight and threads ALL the way through the bell housing whenever you change starters. It wasn't scary but definitely a little spooky.

Yep, aside from wiring.. the lower bolt was the only mod I had to do. Good thing I keep spares.

We don't tolerate that type of language here,Matt was just saying you wasted 200 on what $20 could have done better.

I like the starter.Years ago I would rebuild my own when I could buy the brushes and parts for a low price. Now the cost of the parts is high.

I don't think any offense was meant by the "horsepower b****" reply, and none apparently taken due to the "LOL" reply.

That said, what is typed can't always be translated easily, so do be a bit careful with such replies. The second word could have been left out easily, same message. Not a warning, just a friendly suggestion. Not because of "political correctness", but we do have a "be polite" policy on the AMC Forum.  Too easy for someone to take a comment the wrong way and unintentionally start something... hopefully unintentional.

I love this forum, if not informative it's amusing.
