I have a 1967 rambler rebel sst convertible rhd  232 with I believe a m37 transmission. My question is what other gearbox bolts up to the engine with minimum fuss as mine will not change into top and seems it will be very expensive to fix, probably more than obtaining an alternative working gearbox.

that's it. short of converting to a manual transmission (bell, flywheel, clutch, linkage, etc). possibly other minor variants of the M-3x series, but that won't be of much help.

if it's an enclosed driveshaft model, then that is it, it, it, zero other options. zero interchange. no choice.

in any case rebuilding it will not be more expensive htat rebuilding any other automatic transmission from the era. it's a fine transmission, it has no serious design flaws to speak of. rugged and robust. they require slightly more maintenance than "modern" trans, hardly anything.

also -- it's a 40 year old car, a capitalist product with a modest life. you can poke at it to keep it barely running for sunday drives, but at some point all used metal needs to be torn down and rebuilt. 40 years is 30+ years past any reasonable expectation. i understand that may not be personally affordable (i too wish i were rich :-)

in this instance the shortest path to success will likely be removal, rebuild, reinstall.

the borg warner transmissions have parts available. the catch will be finding someone to do the work, if ytou dont.

Volvo and Jaguar also used the same transmission. however they will NOT interchange -- the case (and all its fitment) is unique to each car. the internals however are largely interchangable.

67 is open driveshaft, which is good. Unfortunately, the 41-71 six uses a different bell housing (smaller) than 72+. So you're stuck with a M3x or M4x Borg Warner auto -- unless you change out to a 72+ 232/258/4.0L six. Then you can use a newer AMC auto trans.

I totally agree with Tom.  It's an easy rebuild for a reputable shop, and once it's working properly you will enjoy the car a lot more.  The M-3x was used in a number of European and British cars, they're all very similar.  You might have difficulty finding a replacement but I'd think finding a shop wouldn't be too difficult.  Plus the straight sixes run forever so it's kind of smart money.  Sort out the drivetrain and go from there.
