I wonder if the impeller bushings are worn. It would allow the splines to be shifted down by gravity, when placed on the shaft.

I have a new rebuilt Th400 converter, and even with good bushings, the shaft must be dead center to fit in place. So I must wiggle the converter just before engaging.

When i stuck my finger in the converter the splined part did move around quite a bit. This must be the problem?

Yeah, tried turning it, and stood it up on its tail. No luck. Going to try getting a rebuilt converter.

Wrong converter maybe? Lockup vs non-lock?

I have installed 100s of converters, the 727 has caused me the most aggravation. I would use a flash light to find were the drive tabs are located in the pump. Mark the back of the converter location of the slots. Use two long bolts threaded into bolt holes. Stand trans on end and gently set converter in place. Rotate back and forth using bolts, Take some time and gently wiggle and rotate converter.

I would upgrade converter and pump to the 888 (727 with Hydraulic controlled valve body and overdrive) That became the 47re I think. Converter and pump were stronger with factory built in bolted on sprague.
