Along with Bigfoot, the Publisher's Clearinghouse jackpot, and D.B. Cooper, I submit that timing marks on the front pulleys of the 232 are among those things that are mentioned in whispers but haven't been proven to exist..... Any magic trick to establishing what the actual mark is, which pulley it's on, I'm assuming it's on the one closest to the timing cover... looks like I'm going to be pulling the valve cover and watching the valves open and close. Pretty sure the PO got things off kilter. Or maybe not.

It's on the outer ring of the damper.  Just a slash mark,  you'll usually have to clean it out,  and mark it with chalk so you can see it easy with the timing light.

But the outer ring of the pulley could have slipped if the rubber in the damper has hardened and lost it's hold on the outer ring.   Then that mark won't mean anything .

Pull number one plug and turn the engine until the piston is at the top of its stroke. Then the timing mark should be close to TDC on either the compression or exhaust stroke, but it does not matter when finding the mark.  Then I find the mark and clean it, followed by a dab of paint.
