I was under my car 70 amx and noticed on the driver side ,the engine cross member is missing the forward bolt ,I think I can fill threads but on the other side I see studs with nuts holding it in place .

The back one on the missing side also has a nut , any ideas ?

I think it's typical for them to have one stud and one bolt on each side.

Yes, this is could be normal for 70 cars, cross over year from 68/9 that used 4 studs and 4 taper nuts that look like lugnuts.  The way to tell is if it had the combination of nuts and bolts, the cross member has a heavy internally tapered seat welded to the cross member and on the same side the would have just the metal thickness of the cross member.  The seat for the nuts and the bolts would both be forward or aft, not mixed up.  If needed I could get you a pic, but I don't have one handy at the moment.

The correct thread is 1/2"-20 National Fine, Grade 8 strength.
