When the engine is cold, the door in the air cleaner snorkle is closed. The air gets sucked over the hot exhaust manifold & the air is heated, goes up the heat duct, thru the snorkle, into the carb. This helps the engine to warm up quicker, eliminates carb icing in really cold conditions, & cleans up emissions on startup.
Once the thermostatic spring in the snorkle warms up, it opens the door in the snorkle & the engine breathes under hood temp air. Where are you in Pittsburgh?? I'm about 15 miles north of town. There are a few other AMC owners around. |

Sounds simple enough... When i hear thermostatic spring i always think..... Not going to work.. Only because the choke never does. Iwould leave it off but is a heck of a conversation peice... Haha.. South hills of Pittsburgh so not all that far from ya.

If you have a good 'stove pipe' and air cleaner with snorkel, hang onto it. Many of these were thrown away over time, and these are getting harder to find.

I used to cruise South Park (not the TV show) with my 68 AMX back in the 80's and lived in Clairton.....I lived in the highest (elevation) house in that old steel town, formally Mayor's house, from what I was told.
