I bought a NOS filter assembly to put on the 58 flathead and it's pretty obvious it wants to go on the passenger side and drop the lines straight down to the tapped and plugged pressure rail ridge on the block just above the pan joint.
Putting it on the driver's side looks like a PITA.

After a little research it appears that the L-head had the oil filter on the right (US passenger side) and the OHV on the left. Except for L-heads equipped with AC -- then the filter would have to be moved to the right... or somewhere else. Few L-heads sold with AC, I would think, but the 63 American TSM shows the L-head AC bracket in the AC section... of all things the L-head bracket! It basically bolts on where the oil filter usually was with the AC compressor hanging below the bracket (with another flat plate bracket on the front for added support). OHV used a cast bracket that bolted to the side of the engine -- I had one of those. Have to look in the 63 big car TSM to see it.
