Ok we are going to pull the engine tomorrow and leave the drivetrain intact. We will pull the torque converter off of the tranny snout. I found fine metal shavings in the tranny oil when I dumped it into the recycling can this afternoon. I had not noticed them before. The drain pan was new so I know they came from the tranny. They are fine and they are ferrous. This is maybe one fourth of them. Pic below:

Hopefully the converter will solve the problem. Many times when a trans tears up the converter is good, but if not flushed will just run the metal shavings it catches right back through the trans. I don't know of any shop that will honor a rebuilt trans warranty if the converter isn't replaced when the trans is reinstalled.
