So my car with 6 cyl, 998 trans is shifting strangely. It shifts from first to second normally, but then dungs into third almost immediately after going into second. When I shift it manually at part throttle from second to third, it slips then grabs third. If I take my foot off gas when shifting it is normal. 

Some history . I just did a head gasket and had the carb rebuilt, so all of the linkages were off for a while. I am running a Motorcraft 2 barrel with a downward pull linkage.

I think your kick down linkage is out of whack. I was reading before half way and remembered my 73 had a similar issue when I messed with the linkage. Had to re adjust the kickdown for proper shifts from 2 to 3 and automatic down shifts.

not enough adjustment--in other words, more pulling on the lever.

have someone hold the throttle to the floor...and adjust the throttle pressure rod so the lever on the trans all maxed out...start from there and fine tune

If you have trouble adjusting the stock linkage, Lokar makes a cable to replace it. The cable is generally easier to adjust. No AMC specific application, order for the trans type. You might have to modify the bracket to fit your carb, but others have used the Lokar cable with an MC2100/2150 on the AMC six.

Not sure how the adjustment works. It seems as if the bolt is at the farthest forward it can go on the linkage. But I may not even know what I'm looking at
