So, I'm dumb
Also my fingers are weird
Poking any fingers in the spark plug hole doesn't work.

I think #1 is set -
It's piston is at the top, both valves are closed
Timing mark on balancer @6bftdc

#3 intake valve is open
Does this mean anything?
Is #1 not on the compression stroke..or is it?

If both valves are closed, and the piston is at the top,  the #1 has to be on the compression stroke.

You don't have to completely close the spark plug hole with your finger,  you just need to restrict it enough so you can feel the compression leaking out, telling you it's on the compression stroke.

I've got a caution about doing this on a Nissan,  with 2 spark plugs per cylinder.  I forgot about the other plug, and was amazed when the engine fired with my finger in the spark plug hole. It about blew my finger nail off.

You can run a soft wire in the spark plug hole to determine TDC also. Turn the engine by hand, not the starter!
