so now I have a real predicament. One day I was taking my 62 rambler ambassador out of the driveway and it stalled (which it does if I don't warm it up long enough). But when I went to start it back up, the starter made a high pitch whine sound. So of course I thought the start went bad. Had it rebuilt and of course they said the clutch went bad. So after I put the starter back in, I was expecting it to start right up. Wrong! Exact same high pitched whine. no start. Any ideas??? Is it a battery situation? Clock still works. Lights work. Just need some guidance. Hoping it's not something serious! Any guidance would be appreciated.

Long-distance diagnosis is an inexact science. Having said that, my guess, based upon your description of the sound it makes, is that the starter drive isn't engaging the flywheel. With the starter being newly rebuilt, I would suggest that there's a bad spot on the flywheel ring gear.

Sounds like the throw out is not kicking the clutch out to engage the flywheel. If it is like a Ford starter, there Is an odd cover that has a sloped shape mounted to the side. You could remove the cover and inspect how it works when voltage is given to the stater directly with a battery, and some cables. Though before removing the cover you can verify how the clutch is being pushed out when the starter has voltage. If It does not move away from its resting position towards the far end about 3/8" or so, then the throw out is not doing its job.

Try turning the motor over a little (just grab fan and turn as far as you can... no clutch fan then!) then hit the starter. If it's a bad spot in the flywheel that should do it.
