Also, if the plastic trim piece has any broken tabs on the back it will flex too much when you push on it and you will have a difficult time getting the divider into the groove.

It helps if you pre bend the panel before putting it in. Also, the carpet along the back edge should be about 1/2" short of the actual edge of the panel. The vinyl edge binding wraps over the edge and glues to the back side of the panel. The fact that the carpet stops short creates a rear edge vinyl covered lip that's thin enough to slip into the groove in the plastic. If you have to you can secure the lower edge of the plastic trim panel to the steel ledge below using some short 1/4-20 truss head bolts and nuts. You'll see that the plastic trim panel has holes along that bottom edge that will be concealed by the carpet panel.
Long time AMC fan. Ambassador 343, AMX 390, Hornet 360, Spirit 304 and Javelin 390. All but javelin bought new.

Does anyone have a good picture of these filler panels that go beside the wheel wells?

American Parts Depot has a picture of the filler boards by themselves on their website. It's under the heading AMX Javelin Interior. Scroll down page- just above floor mats. APD #293 0909, $10.00/pr. plus mandatory shipping. Sorry, don't have photo of boards installed.  Bruce
