High guys, my V16 AMC is ready for the Dyno so now time to plan my CJ5 engine.
I have a nice 1967 343 I want to build for it. What does it take to make 400hp at the crank. Im ok with 10 to 1 I have a torker that was slotted for early and late years I plug welded and redrilled for later and welded up all heat crossover and choke stuff, an erson cam 108 lsa 480 lift 238 @.050, Edelbrock shorty headers that exit 3" that I had on my Rambler running 11.36 and I plan to use late 80's heads Edited by pipefactory - Apr/28/2017 at 6:03am |

Honestly start with a 360.
But I have owned 343s and loved em. 11:1 compression, a quench of .03 (.1+ is typical of the 343s I have disassembled) ad a nice 300 deg advertised duration cam and 400 hp should be easy peasy. Block those intake heat cross over ports for best results. |

I've seen several 343's making over 400hp... so that is achievable.
A lot of 343 engines have used the 360 crank for making a lot of power! That'd be a real sleeper modification! Also... a 360 can be had complete for $150 on Craigslist! So... there are a lot of possibilities that will make the power you want... |

First step is to work out what trans you want to run behind it. If it's a TH400 or TF727, then use a later 360 crank in the build, it will give you a few extra cubes and save modifying the crank to take the later transmissions.

I'm going to use the T15 thatis in the Jeep. Not going racing just want to make something cool. This is what the Jeep has now.

I don't post here very much, but I thought I'd share that you might want to rethink putting that much HP in front of a T15. They were designed to handle the output of a stock 304, and not much more. I scattered mine within weeks of building up the 304 I used to have in my CJ. I adapted a Ford T18 to take its place using a Novak adapter. The T18 is Rhino strong, and should hold the 400 ponies well. Sounds like a great project!
