ok benn busy with family.
back to car, after trying everything from .040 to .180 shims behind the pinion race I have determined
I must have a bad gear? the reading on the drive side of the ring was to the outside of ring , but get this the reading on the coast side was toward the center. ive ordered a 3.54 from summit .
ive pulled the rear and have it on jack stands cleaning it and getting it ready for new gear and bearings.
should have pulled it out to begin with but sometines I think I'm 20 isstead of 59.

Are you sure the old gear ratio is 2.87 and not 2.73? The 2.73 used a unique carrier that is different from the 2.87-up. Since the 2.73 pinion gear is larger, the ring gear is further from center, which would explain why you're having to shim it so thick to get a pattern.

got the shim right, nice pattern, .065 behind pinin race, stock carier shims worked , got .008 backlash.
no in lbs torque wrench, got the pinion bearing set to just a little drag when I turn it.
test drive car. I like it!
drive bout 50-60 miles now and a noise (bearing noise) happens under down hill coast
when slowing down. completely stops bout 20 mph or slower.
I'm pretty sure that when the carrier is driving the pinion the pinion bearings are whats under
load.
so questions, pinion bearing too tight , or  loose, ?
if u touch the gas when noise happens , it stops.
the longer u drive and thin the oil , the louder the noise gets
HELP

So was that a new pinion bearing or the old one?

Did you use a new crush sleeve or are you using a solid spacer and shims for preload? I recall you said you didn't have an in/lb torque wrench so you got it to what felt like appropriate preload by hand.
