Hey all- quick question. Getting ready to start a freshly assembled 1969 343 and I have a slow but steady drip from the driver's rear bottom head bolt. Was I supposed to have used sealer on these bolts (like the old Dodge Poly motors)or is there something else going on? nothing in the TSM about sealer. Heading back out to the garage to pull the exhaust manifold because it has to come off regardless...
And if sealer is needed on the bolts, is it all of them or just a select few? Motor ran well with no leaks prior to being disassembled. Only disassembled it to inspect bearings and install new gaskets. No other internal work done. Appreciate any responses. Would like to have this running by the weekend. |

Sounds like a cracked head...yes, just a regasket job and re-torque can crack the head. I have heard of guys saying the bottom head bolt was drilled in to the water jacket, but after 100+ rebuilds of AMC V-8's I have never seen one....the TSM does not tell you to apply sealer, like you said nothing in any TSM. Look at the front of the head from the corner of the face to the head surface.....that is the most common crack area. Sorry, hope it is something else!

Same issue I had with my 343, only after rebuild, same area for leak, and it was a cracked head, it cracked at the rear lower bolt, if you look at the casting it is cut at a sharp angle , factory did not allow relief for the stress of the final torque. I read somewhere on this forum that during final torque people have switched the torque sequence to torque the bolt in the rocker area 1st then the lower head bolt, thought is it takes the stress off the lower area.

OK Ross- pulled the head off tonight. Head looks fine. Root cause: Never assume when you buy a gasket set that has two head gaskets that you actually have TWO gaskets. In this case there were three. The right side has just one, as it should. The side that was leaking had 2 gaskets that apparently stuck together at the gasket factory. My 50 year old eyesight did not detect this............

BTW what sealer do you recommend on these? Since I'm doing them again!

That is great news......the only thing I apply is Copper Spray, unless the head gaskets say no to apply anything.
