There is a piece of wire or pieces of wire running through the water jacket in the cylinder head. does anyone know what it's for?

It's part of the mold for the head when it was cast.
My head had one also. Nick

If you want to know more about the 196, tomj and Farna are the ones to talk to.

i've seen those too, i think nickelone's correct, and a quick google seems to support it. consensus seems to be they held blocks in place to keep passageways open. i never worried about them but someone pointed out if the wire rusts through it could lodge in the thermostat and block it open. never heard of that but i suppose it's possible. not sure i am gonna lose sleep over it.

At this point I think you're safe Tom! The wire in your head has probably rusted to dust long ago... the Rambler head, not yours, but maybe applies to both...
I've never had one come loose and block anything. I do recall pulling bits of it out from one head I rebuilt, didn't even find it in one or two. |

The wire was probably holding the marbles in...
