According to my 1969 TSM, the 199 uses the M36.  232 uses M37.   (I have a 199/M36 in my one car)

Good to know.

Then what I thought was an M36 actually was an M35 and it must come with different ring gear and bell housing configurations.

Why not just get an M40 from a 290? Post on the wanted section, they're probably cheap-if not free.

Lots of 290 parts cars around this forum

All the 3x trannys are similar. The 36 may still use a TV cable (used for kick-down and internal pressure), but will supposedly handle a little more power than the 35. The progression in numbers indicate a change to the trans, not necessarily an increase in power handling though. The only difference between the 36 and 37 may be the switch from TV cable to vacuum modulation, no difference in power handling.  I don't know that for sure -- the 37 may indeed be able to handle a little more power than the 36, just pointing out that numbers changed when a change occurred.

The tag on the left side of the trans (driver's side for US models) will have an "ASx-xx" number on it.  The last two are the model number.
