What do you call the flexible rubber boot that goes between the trans output and torque tube?
I think I ruined mine when I swapped engines (the jack was leaking and the tranny went too low). I'm thinking this is the new problem I have, that is, a shimmy at about 30 MPH after I hit a bump on one side of the car. I replaced motor and tranny mounts already. Any info would be very much appreciated.

I believe it is called the Torque tube trunnion. Galvins sells them.

Yep torque tube trunnions. Blazers AMC is the one who produces them. Pricey but great product.

Did you replace the trans crossmember mounts? There is a trans mount directly under the trans, but there are also rubber mounts on each end of the crossmember where it bolts to the body. Those are often overlooked.

All the trunnion cushion does is keep the torque tube in place front to back. It compresses a bit as the rear axle moves up and down, keeping pressure on the trunnion. It shouldn't cause a shimmy. The crossmember mounts will. If the shimmy gets worse with higher speed it could be the universal joint. That will usually be a vibration though, not a shimmy. Inspect the truss rods also. You could have bent or broken one of them. Truss rods are the angled rods that go from near the ends of the axle to the torque tube. Look at the panhard rod also.

I replaced my 66 Classic torque tube trunnion and it is pricy but it is better than oe. Mine was like warm jello from trans fluid and completely gone. I didn't have any shake so I don't think that's your problem.
