Hello, I found a nice set of wheels for my 1969 Rambler 440 wagon. They are standard offset 14X6. Just want to make sure I shouldn't have clearance issues with them. I will also have lowering plates and two inch blocks on back. Any reason to worry? Thanks

I don't think so. 6" or 7" wheels should clear with a standard backset (usually 3" for 6", 3.5" for 7").

I have Ansen sprint 14x6s with 205s all around, no problems ever. When I bought the car it had Crager 14x6s with 225s in the back and still no rubs.

I'm finally coming to terms with the way new wheels and tires interact with these old cars. I spent a day replacing the rear shocks on my 71 Javelin and it was gnarly. Had to hammer out both of the old rust tubes and take a puff ball to the threads on the eyelet bolts. The shocks had completely collapsed and I had to rig a combination of platforms, jacks and blocks JUST to squeeze the new coilovers into place. I still have weird bumping noises coming from somewhere under the car but the back end is definitely riding better. Front shocks are next and will hopefully eliminate the noise.
The suspension on these cars is just as important as a new set of wheels and tires. If you're dropping $$$$ into wheels and tires like I am, you must pay attention to the suspension characteristics as well. Expanded length, collapsed length, total travel, 90/10 or 70/30 behaviors...All of it. Do not skimp and don't forget to measure. The dimensioning on these cars are slightly different across each model but the recipe is the same. I have the same typical 5x4.5 bolt pattern and single digit offset as any of you but the dimensioning on front wheels are the worst. I get physical interference with my brakes if I put on stock 14" rims. Rather than figure out everything tied into that problem, I opted straight for the wheel and tire package that this deserved. So, it can be some trial and error. |
