I believe they had a core shift problem. I've seen the early blocks both ways.

When I assembled the engine I now have in my 82 j-10, I took a air gun and blew down the hole in question, you could tell it wasn't a blind hole, the air blew thru it. But I never looked down it with anything. I just used sealant on the bolt as recommended by the TSM, , Chilton, And I think BJ Builds a AMC, that I followed then. That was in 2002 or 03, almost 100,000 miles ago, no leakage yet.
I looked down that same bolt hole in the 360 block from a 70 Ambassador today with a small flex prob light I have. The hole isn't complelely open on the bottom, about 1/3 rd of the diameter of the bottom 1/4 -1/2 inch of the hole toward the outside of the block is open. It could be core shift, but with it also being present on the 75 block in my J-10, it isn't necessarily a problem that AMC ever completely solved .

Thanks for all the responses!!
So, from what yall are saying there is no open holes in the right side passenger side head that might go into a water jacket, correct?

This is America. What you believe is not the problem... What you believe I SHOULD BELIEVE is the problem!

The only hole in question is the lowest row of bolt holes, 2nd from the front, left ( driver's ) side .
All the rest, I think we all agree, are blind, closed, holes. But during any engine assembly you should always check, who can guess what might have happened in the past to a 30 + year old engine.

Crud at the bottom of the hole or too much lube during assembly can pop the bottom out of that hole also. I check them every time and after a hundred or so, I've never seen one broke through. The problem does exist but it's extremely rare. Still gotta check it. I would prefer not to use sealer if not needed because it greatly effects torque.

Thicker head gasket will tend to be counter productive.
Tighter the quench is the less the tendency to detonate. Sir Harry Ricardo discovered this phenomenon over 100 years ago and it still holds true today. As to heads AMC cracking (with proper procedure). AMC 291C heads tend to lack a machining radius at the front and rear bolt holes under the exhaust ports. I have cracked them and others have had this problem. This can be (carefully) re-machined to add a .06 radius. But putting money into old iron heads is questionable as Aluminum heads are so CHEAP these days. I have never had a leak around a head bolt hole. |
