I am trying to put my rear axle back together after replacing my wheel bearings. I have been reading my 1969 TSM and I put the passenger side axle shaft in with a new outer seal and reinstalled the backing plate. I then went to the drivers side and it says that the bearing doesn't go in as far as the passenger side because there are shims to set free play. My question is: How far is the race supposed to be put in before the outer seal and backing plate are installed so I can check the free play?

I put the race into the housing as far as it will go. Then measure how for out it protrudes, Add shim stack a little more than it protrudes, assemble and then check axle endplay.
