Since you are trashing your harness,,, I would cut just before and just after the grommet. Pull out the wires so it is hollow, and try to remove the tape that bound the wire harness. Once that is done, take a sharp hobby knife and split the grommet at the area that faces down when installed to the firewall. Obtain the 3M adhesive I posted... also measure out exactly where the grommet was on the old harness, and add a bead of adhesive around in the center of the grommet and install in the correct direction. Use a small bead on the face of the cut end to seal once the cut ends are pinched in place. YOU may want to setup the wire harness through the fire wall so you can install the grommet in place and leave alone.

Thanks for the great info. Armed with that, I got really "creative".
I dug up under the dash to pull down what's left of the original rat's nest harness and there found the grommet still attached on the inside. The original harness and wiring throughout the car is a disaster and I've already ordered another. Now I'll just have to figure out the best way to transfer the grommet to the new harness without trashing it. As you said, looks like it was molded right to the harness. If I can't slide it, then split it and reseal.

If you ordered a new reproduction harness it comes with the grommet, that is an exact duplicate of your original......plug and play, no need to transfer anything.

I went with an aftermarket harness since I need a few more circuits than stock. Glad I still have my grommet.
