I have rebuilt the air cond. on my 73 Javelin but have a problem. The valve coupling at dryer, that connects to line with site glass fell apart. Can the system work without the inside parts to this coupling. I have been told it was only needed due to the fabrication process at AMC. I thought this piece regulated the high/low side pressure.
All help greatly appreciated.

Dave

Not sure without a picture... earlier AC systems used a valve that some could remove to allow good pressure for 134a conversion. I have a 71, though the coupling seems different than pre 71 systems, though I do have the sight glass as many AMC cars do.

David, this is a photo of a '74 setup.
I know that the actual dryer is different from '73 to '74, but the coupling may be similar....

If you are talking about the check valve inside the brass coupling that Dickie is showing in his pic above.  The answer is it is NOT needed, HOWEVER you have to remove the mate check valve on the dryer side too.  Put new o-rings on the hose and the dryer and re-install the factory "quick disconnect", without BOTH check valves.  These check were put in place to allow the factory to pre-charge the evaporator with a full load of Freon.  They actually cause a restriction in the line and catch debris.......

Ah, so that is why my 71 has a difference. Possibly from a service done long ago.

OK I know there is a valve in the brass fitting, which is destroyed, but where is the other check valve?
Don't recall seeing any other check valves and do not have a good schematic  of a/c system.

Thanks
Dave

The two mating check valves of the two haves of the Brass Coupling, between the dryer and the hose that contains the glass lense to view the Freon as it travels through the system.  You can buy new brass couplings from the Ford Mustang folks, the exact same part was used on 67 - 73 Mustangs with factory Air..
