If you can provide the numbers I'm sure someone on the forum can decode them for you.

You can look up the paint codes at www.paintref.com and www.autocolorlibrary.com. The multiple codes on your car indicate that it was a tri- color car with one color ( code 78) used twice in the color scheme. Code 72 represented Frost White for many years too. I have a reference book that will help decode the model number and how many of that model were made, but others here on the forum can provide that info. To decode the trim number requires a information in a data code upholstery book, which is a rather scarce item. That code references the interior color and level of trim installed in your car and in some cases the seat type ( e.g. bench, split bench, etc.) where applicable. You may be able to get actual sample swatches of the original fabric and vinyl be contacting SMS Auto Interiors in Oregon with your trim code. The body number in later cars indicates which body plant and the sequential number of the body in that plant. AMC had several separate body plants even back in 1956. Joe

The serial (VIN) indicates a V-8 Ambassador built in Kenosha.  The model number given conflicts with some source data I have but it's either an Ambassador 4dr Super sedan or an Ambassador 4dr Custom sedan.  The 72 in the paint code is White.

Ok, The 78-72-78 is Frost white (72) and Grenadier Red (78) , a tri-tone color. Should be a pretty car. Trim #646 is Gray cloth with off white vinyl bolsters and off white vinyl embossed headliner. It should be a model # 5685-1 and according to my records with out giving a closer look and really digging the serial number should be a U not a V and starting serial should be U-1001 with 3,349 cars built, but production figures are combined for models #5685-1(super) and 5684-2 (custom) . I'd need to know - # to tell for sure.  The body number is really not that useful , as for the most part the records for the starting body numbers are poor at best. This what my 1956 Nash Data book seems to show. LRDaum
