Question:
360ci w/727TC....
Look at the below photo.
Is there not a spring missing on the transmission kick down linkage?
I just noticed and I could be wrong, but I think there should be a spring?
I am having an issue that if I try to maintain a constant slow speed around 10-20 mph while in D,
the transmission will sometimes down shift to lower gear by itself, is this normal?
Or is this issue related/caused by the missing spring?
What length of spring and tension do I need and who sells them?
Or is it just a universal type spring from a local auto parts store?
Thanks.

yep, your missing the spring. I think you are OK with a universal car parts or custom made spring from hardware store.

since there are a number of TF trannie, i am sure someone has a spring or an online Mopar parts store has them.

you can see that there are holes for mounting between the smallish link.

PS... the spring has a long straight wire end, it fits on the tab on the carb side of the link.

The direction of travel is opposite on a Mopar 727 kickdown compared to an AMC but the Mopar spring may still work.

I would say your transmission is operating normally. The Mopar sourced auto transmissions used in AMC's had what they called a part throttle kickdown. This kickdown would occur without mashing the throttle like you normally would to get the kickdown.

Pre 71 Torqueflites didn't have this feature. So, if the PTK really bothers you, it is possible to remove that feature by modifying the valve body to be like the older ones. But most people seem to go the opposite way & add PTK to their older transmissions.

A google search will probably turn up more info if you are interested.

Scott, not so fast... until the spring is installed, his tranny should shift better than being so touchy. what Dltowers explained is not normal for operation, when the linkage is setup properly. it is just to touchy on down shifting without the spring installed.
