Thicker drag links are discussed on the Trans Am Camaro website. Chevy and Penske/Donohue went to the trouble of specifying stronger/larger drag links for the '67 TA Camaros. The drag link is the center piece of the pittman/idler/drag link trio and spans the majority of the side to side horizontal distance ( idler/pittman being vertical and fore/aft ) and in keeping with simple grade school physics, the center of a length of tubing or rod needs to be the strongest as the midpoint is the furthest from the ends and is the weakest. A beefier overall piece covers this simple natural physical fact.
AMC changed from trunnions to regular ball joint in '70 and the change might reflect the design difference and the way the steering linkage works or it could be the result of racing feedback from the previous two years of TA action given that TA Javelins employed the ball-joint design during the '69 season.

Thanks for the info Slate. Makes sense. I think I will put the larger diameter drag link on as the car will be doing some track days and I can't think how it could hurt. Have an NOS one so might as well use it.
