I have read that it has been done but can't find anymore info. My 76 is begging for a better gear and some OD.. Anyone know which axle has the closest wms? What master cylinder will work correctly for rear disc brakes?

Well I am using a ford 79 f150 rear with two 2001 8.8 Explorer axles. So I assume 65" track will fit, as i must fit modern backspaced wheels to make it work with my 71 Javelin.  Not sure about the Pacer requiring modern wheels, but with 12" rotors you will need larger than 15" rims as the clearance is not good enough for breathing. I followed an old blog about 12" rotors under 15" steel rims, not pretty when it comes to heat generated by braking.

I've got some 3.5" backspaced 15x8s on the rear right now so should clear pretty well if not more than ford's 16s. Really hoping an exploder diff will be close since they are so easy to find with a posi. Need to break out the long Johns and a tape measure I guess.

You will find all the 8.8" axle info you could want at www.therangerstation.com, look in the tech area. They have the measurements for most 8.8" axles. I think an Explorer axle is about the right width for a Pacer. The hog head is offset by 3", but that's not an issue as long as the driveshaft clears everything under the car. It should, I think.

The pacer rear is 60" wide and a Fox body Mustang is 57". 1994-1998 Mustang is 60.25" and 1999-2004 Mustang is 61". 28 spline Trac-Loc diffs are no longer available for  but the rebuild kits are available. You can upgrade to a 33 spline carrier and axles. Fox body is 4 lug except for the 1993 Cobra. 1994 and up is 5 lug.

Is that measured back plate to back plate, or hub to hub?

I might have to go out with my tape measure and doublecheck, but i believe it is hub to hub.

As above - check out the Ranger Station. The Explorers had a hub to hub 59.5" width. You have to change the mount locations but get lots of gear ratio options, many came with posi, 31 spline vs 28 for more HP and 1997 to 2000 are drum brakes but 2001 to 2003 are disks - bolt on interchangeable (you will have to verify those years).
Personally after doing the rear disk option I would keep with the drum rears and use the hope stock braking system. Rear disks are flashy but are more expensive to maintain and do not get you stopped faster.
