I wrote earlier that my Motorcraft battery has completed 18 years of service and still going. I wonder if the plywood under it in any way helps in that it offers a certain amount of insulating properties that might prevent sedimentation and resulting shorting of the plates at the bottom of the case? The extra capacity might also help in that it never gets drawn down as far as a smaller battery would. Just musings on my part I guess.

You may have something there Vinny, I remember being told not to place a battery on a concrete floor. I've always stored them off the floor on a bench or table, or put them on a piece of wood if I had to put them on the floor for any length of time. Me thinks that anything that can further isolate the case from a conductor, or moisture for that matter, adds life to the battery.
