I put a Detroit EZ locker in the AMC 20 in my Gremlin. It acts like a spool in there. There is absolutely no ratcheting or any give when I turn a corner. In fact, the tire will squeal. Anybody have any of these lunchbox lockers act like this? I had a guy tell me it's because the Gremlin is so light in back. It also has Caltrac's if that would make a difference.

Throw 2-4 50# bags of sand in the back and find out. Or have a heavy friend sit in the back seat and take a drive. That will let you know if weight is the problem -- it could be.

I have used one before and that is the problem, They need more weight to release the locking mechanism. It will break in some but stay locked more than not, even in turns if You are light. They were really designed for the Mod 20 in 4WD applications. The one I had wouldn't release in My J-10 unless there was some weight in the bed.

Could be that the Gremlin is too light, it could be set up wrong. I had one in a Suzuki Samurai and it worked just fine.

Seems there was a test for function. I don't remember exactly, but lift both rear wheels off the ground. Car in gear or in park, have a helper turn one rear tire hard froward until it stops and hold it, then try to turn the other wheel the same direction, it should turn and you should hear it ratchet. If it won't release, there's probably a set-up problem.

I think the EZ locker is out of production, Detroit was bought out by Eaton a few years ago. Powertrax still makes a near identical unit, you might be able to find an installation guide online.

Maybe the Gremlin is too light for the Detroit EZ locker but I know a Lock Right locker works just fine and yes that is in my 75 Gremlin.

The only time it locks is under power. Off power it makes a loud clicking noise. From outside the car people will look at you/car like "what the he11!" inside the car it is like someone is hitting the housing with a large hammer.

Mine has been in for over 15 years and from what I remember the spider gear cupped thrust washers were too thin and I had to get thicker ones. Other than that no issues at all with it.
