Just wondering the best way to go about this. Heat gun to melt the glue?

You can use a heat gun, but be very careful of the heat as you can damage the trim.
If the vehicle moves, place it outside facing the sun. After everything warms up gently start on one end and gently pull. If you are very careful, you can use a long razor knife ( the razors similar used by glass shops) to cut the adhesive.
