As hard as it has been for you to find the right parts to correct your shifter, it will be easier than swapping a 4-speed in. Not only is it hard to find a good one that does not need an immediate rebuild, you would also need a new bellhousing, driveshaft, cut a larger hole in your floor, and some other things. It is a lot of work. Have you checked with a place like Summit Racing to see if there is an aftermarket piece like a Hurst 3-speed shifter than might replace yours? |

I thought all the standard transmissions matched up to the 74 and newer bell housings. A Hurst shifter and kit runs about $400 and then there is the modifications on install.

My god that brings back some memories...only not good ones. My 69 Jav had that thing in it and it was wore out pretty good. Was leaving a 4th of july fireworks show (With only 2 ways to get out of beach area) and I was creeping uphill with traffic and it decided to lock into both gears as the both levers moved instead of one and i'm on a hill which is keeping a load on the gears.....Had to wait till all traffic cleared after everyone yelling things like "POS AMC, Move that hunk of crap etc..." and jack up car and fix....sorry to hijack thread but I just had to...make sure whatever you do, you rebuild so that never happens to you...I'm scarred for life

No. If you were to find and use a T-10, it requires an 8" deep bell; the one you currently have is a 6" deep bell. Finding a deeper one is becoming very hard these days. We did this swap to my Son's Gremlin; it takes quite a bit of work. |
