Okay I'm about to set this thing on fire!! I've bought 3 hub pullers now and have ruined 2 of them. The 3rd one is the most heavy duty one I can find. It's made by OTC I can't remember the part number but it comes with a big 1/2" thick plate that bolts to the hub and uses a burley 1" diameter threaded stud. I've used lots of heat and now that thick 1/2" plate is starting to bend, yet the damn hub won't budge. It's an Arizona car so I would think it could still have the potential to separate.

Any tips?

I think axle swap is going to be the easy fix. For the amount I've spent on tools to separate this hub I could have bought a donor axle.

Why are you trying to remove the hub?

Trying to replace the axle seals, and clean the drum brake backing plates. I'm going to try and remove the 4 bolts from the axle tube and slide everything out all at once. That might work.

get some tension on the puller and give the puller nut a good hard smack with a BFH.... only way I ever got them off.

And if that doesn't work, leave the puller on under tension for a while. I've done that in a 20 ton hydraulic press. Had one pop off about an hour later and scare me -- sounds like a pistol shot when it pops loose! Another I just left in the press over night, came back the next morning and it was in two pieces. If after about four hours it's not loose, put just a little more tension on and let it sit again. A buddy did that and the second time he went to put tension on it just pulled right off, no pop like I always got. He was using a puller similar to yours, not a vertical hydraulic press. In the press I put a block of wood under the axle end, about an inch between block and axle. That keeps the axle in the hub so it won't fall over when it pops, and protects the axle end from damage (don't want to hit the hard concrete floor!).

If it's like the AMC20, take out the 4 bolts holding the backing plate, disconnect the brake line and e-brake cable. Pull the axle shaft/hub with the backing plate still on it. You can turn the brake drum backwards and put on lug nuts loosely, and use the drum as a slide hammer. Cut the cage on the bearing and let the rollers fall out. The backing plate will now come off. Take the axle/hub to a local machine shop and let them press it apart. My shop charged $10 each, it's worth the aggravation.

you'll eventually pay for it...
and not have it.
