Nice and informative. I pulled trunnions years ago and had a spring 'Escape' on one occasion. |

Since this thread was resurrected from five years ago, thought I'd explain how I removed the coiled springs from my 68 AMX. Made a spring compressor that removes, holds, an installs trunnion coiled springs using threaded rod, 6" pipe, wheel bearings (to reduce friction when compressing the spring), 8" hollow deep socket from galvanized pipe),etc see photo. Quick, easy, and safe.

This is a good looking trunnion spring compressor. I am thinking about making one similar to this. It solves the problem of having to decompress the spring using a long stroke press after it is removed from the car. It would be good if you could give some dimensions and more details about what you used for the components.
Thanks for posting pic

Don't need a press if you still have the engine and trans in the car. Just set the compressed spring under the front sill of the car, right where it flattens out under the floor. Set car down on it, remove "hooks", then jack up. Reverse to get the hooks on a new spring. Works like a charm!
