I think the louver type opening should be in the rear. Are the little nubs for the rocker arms on the left or right side of the valve cover, the way it is installed now? I don't know the purpose for that hole though. Joe

Actually I have two heads / valve covers that are the same. Louver about an inch long in the front and the round hole to the rear

Those are just to let fresh air IN. The road draft tube or PCV (later models) is on the front side cover low on the right side of the engine, so it draws fumes down from the head. The PCV models only have the one louvered opening in the back. I suspect the road draft tube model needs less restriction on the "in"side to work well.

Any way to adapt a PVC to this engine?

yes. Connect a nipple to the front side cover (where the road tube is now) and block that round hole in the valve cover (leave the louvered hole in back). There should be one or more plugs under the carb mount area in the head for vacuum. Use a generic in-line PCV valve. Best bet is to find a photo of a 63-65 model -- they had PCV. Would be nice to get a side cover from one, but the nipple was crimped on and many have come off. Some may be welded or braved back on. Not factory, but stays there!

I assume the valve cover will fit on with the louver front or back. Both my engine and spare head have the louver in the front. I'm game either way.
You say cut off the road tube and I'll braze on a nipple and then I run a hose to vacuum under the carb. I know some PCVs run to the fresh air side of the air cleaner to catch the goo there instead of burning it. It would require frequent filter changes but is that better or worse? As always for you serious participation in answering our questions. Thank you Ron |

Doh... the louver can be in front or back. I haven't had my hands on a 196 in a while, but the VC will only go on one way -- THAT I remember!!
I don't know about better or worse. You just need enough vacuum to draw fumes from the engine. If you use one in the air filter get a filter that fits in the side of the air filter housing that has a small filter in it, so the gunk doesn't get in the actual engine air filter. Get a PCV valve from an engine designed for that type draw though. The ones made for direct engine vacuum may have a stronger spring and/or smaller orifice than the air filter type. |
