Low mileage 69 American wagon with 290 was sitting many years. Reports of past work done with valves. Wires, plugs and stuff was done previously. Fuel in tank replaced. Car didn't idle properly, new carb installed, no difference and no difference with idle screw adjustment. Good vacuum supposedly because brake booster holds it for a long time. Ideas on what it could be?

Long time?
Love the American wagons, always wanted one. Assuming you have all your ducks in a row externaly and it is internal I sustect valves. Try a vacuum gauge at idle, it will jump crazily if valves are the issue.

Gelled/old fuel in the carb usually is the first thing I look into on something sitting very long

Yes totally agreed. Try a different carb if you have one or can borrow one.

He said he already changed the carb and it didn't help the idle.

He could sell me the car, or do a compression test and vacuum gauge test.
Also replace the condensor, their cheap and, in my experiance, fail often. I have a spare 1974 304 that would love that car :-)

Beenmy experience that if the condensor is bad, it will not run. And condensors dont like to sit.

I scored more than one used clunker on the cheep
because a condenser was messing up. Anyway it's a cheep test. |

I already suggested the condensor but he hasn't had time to do anything more yet. I will pass on the vacuum gauge suggestion. Apparently there is an old timer who wants to look at it. He has a shop and all the right analyzing equipment.
I figure he probably has a B/W transmission in it. What would he need to do with flex plate if changing to a 304?

1970 and 1971 304 would be a bolt in using the 304 flex plate.
I did swap a 304 into a 69 Ambassador in place of a 343 with no problems. Later engines would require a trans change or a bushing made (I have never done this) BUT I would change out the old BW for an A-904 or similar trans.
