Is there actually a size difference?

I don't think so.

Same as above but different part number:

It looks like the only difference is the end panels...
I know that the AMC parts vendors were selling the early Hornet cores as the correct one for an AMX or Javelin. You had to add the extra AMX Javelin end panel for it to be correct. I would suspect that the later Hornet cores are the same as the early ones but the end panel is different (easy fix). Anyone ever measure them?

There's a lot of conflicting fitment info.
APDI 9010104 fits Concord and Eagle
but SOMEHOW this one fits more! -
Crown Automotive# J3728196
AMC Eagle (1980-1988).
##AMC AMX (1978-1980).
##AMC Concord (1978-1983).
##AMC Gremlin (1973-1978).
##AMC Hornet (1973-1977).
##AMC Javelin (1973-1974).
##AMC Spirit (1979-1983).

Like an idiot I threw mine away so I don't know what the end panel is supposed to look like

The end panel is flat on the early cores, just like the one in the auction I linked at the top of this page. I am pretty confident that the one in that ebay BIN link is correct for early Hornets.

Yes I think it was flat.
I ordered one that was $42.50 shipped for '73-77 Hornets and I think I can bend off that extra tab. I'll let you guys know if my experiment in cheapness works out.

If you find out it's the same except for the end panel please let us know, I'd be interested to find out myself.

If you can't make that end panel work, I probably have an extra original in my parts..

Great to see that it worked out for you. I thought that the ones on ebay looked like the correct one with the wrong metal cap end..

Did we decide that this heater core works okay on an early Hornet/Gremlin by just cutting off the excess?

I had special ordered it from Summit and they originally said 6-8 weeks and kept stringing me along for 6 months until I realized they are never going to make this core for me.
