Just FYI, when this thread started, I suggested the C-Tek,is is a great unit, but the key to longevity is the electronics on the C-Tek...it not only acts as a maintainer but loads the battery and brings back up on a pulse....that will bring many old batteries back.

I just got a battery from Antique Auto Battery, and they recommend NOT using a trickle charger or maintainer now.  Apparently this is because they have switched to AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries and they claim use of chargers less than 8 amps or more than 12 amps will damage the battery.  They now recommend that you charge it every two to 2.5 months with a 10 or 12 amp charger.

I am sure the 2.5 Month charge with a 10 to 12 amp charger is probably the best but I did run an AGM battery in my travel trailer for eight years using a standard 6 amp charger to bring it back to full charge after each camping trip and winter storage.  I probably wouldn't recommend it but the battery lasted longer than I had ever expected . We dry camped using the battery as our only power source to run fridge ,lights ,furnace , water pump and doing so we would drop the voltage down very low. Those batteries are very impressive and I plan on getting a new one soon.

CamJam,

What brand battery was that?

Way back in the 80s we were using Yuasa AGM batteries in the race cars.

One had to use a trickle charger on them or they fried.

I bought it from Antique Auto Battery. I'm not sure where they get the guts.  It's packaged as an AMC Clear Power.
