So I was pretty sure I used a flywheel (NOT auto flexplate)  from a 79 360 on a 70 Model 360 long ago.

Do I have to use an early manual flywheel from a flat tail crank with an early 304 or is it OK to use a later flywheel, or I am only dreamin?

In case that does not work out, does anyone have an early 304 flywheel they are selling?

That motor must've had the ridged flange or the flywheel had the right step in the back to fit it, otherwise the vehicle is a rolling shear your legs off bomb waiting to happen! Setups like that are the reason for bellhousing scatter shields!

The early flywheel locate on the OD of the flat flange cranks , the OD is 4.500 . The later flywheels locate on the OD of the ring for the Torqueflite convertor on the back of the flange. The OD of the flange of the later cranks is 4.510 . The ID of the later flywheels is 4.625.

Guess it was good that this was a work truck J10.... rarely saw the high side of 3500!

Thank you for the precise feedback!

Happy Holidays!

A machine shop could easily make a spacer ring to fill the gap, but it's not terribly difficult to locate the correct flywheel.
