Glad you found what you needed but you might have been able to get an answer if the title was a little more defined.

It's not an easy question to answer either. About this time, AMC was doing 'running changes' and not defining options within model years.

For instance an '80 thru early '81 will be full-time, non-switchable. But a late '81 could have the 'stop-then-go' shift.

Model years '82 and '83 usually had the 'stop-and-go' shift, however base models could still be fitted with the full-time x-fer box.

Model year '84 saw the debut of the 'shift-on-the-fly' box on paper, but I have personally seen untouched '84's with the 'stop-and-go' switchable box. So, AMC may have been trying to use up leftover stock.

'85, '86 & '87 should all be 'shift on the fly' boxes.

I don't know if it's factory, but I have seen ONE '88 that had a full time box and NO switch on the dash.

I am genetically incapable of being Politically Correct.

That will be the lowest year that I will focus on for that feature. I did own an '80 Limited sedan that I loved and it worked flawlessly.

'80 is always in 4wd though. You can easily convert the vacuum front axle to permanently engaged and re-do the hoses per '85 up diagram then remove the pin from the dash switch. My '82 wagon will get that after I swap the 3.08 front diff in.
