Trying to find why my 64 american steers terrible. On the lift and on the floor all the steering components appear tight and working well. Take it down the road and it's scary. only tried twice and got to 20 mph when it pulls hard left and the steering wheel feels like no response. Takes almost full turn to bring it back and feels like it tries to go the right. 1st time with this suspensions. Is it something in the trunions?

Manual or power steering? Manual or power brakes? Since it's a '64 American it should have the 196 but may have been converted to a 232 or a V8. So, what engine?

Go with common sense. You know about suspenions? The trunnion is just a big goofy looking ball joint. How about the steering box? The rag joint if it has one?

You put it on an Alignment machine to set Caster, Camber and Toe?

From your explanation it sounds like the car doesn't want to steer straight, the steering wheel tries to pull left or right strongly.

If that's what you saying, then that's a caster problem, caster reversed. Like when you go in reverse in a normal car, you cut the wheel, and it'll try to cut even further without any input from the driver.
The suggested caster on these Americans is 0 degrees to 1/2 positive caster.   So it's easy for the caster to get into negative caster from bushing wear, or misadjustment. Negative caster will give you the steering conditions you seem to describe.

We had a similar problem, though not as extreme. Turned out the idle arm was shot although it "appeared" fine.
