Everyone is different, so it's really hard to be sure of exactly what sound you'll like. It'd proably be good to hit a cruise night and listen to some different setups and ask the owners about the ones you like.

In the 70's & 80's glass packs were the defacto standard for loud exhaust. One of my favorites was my stock cammed 74 Nova 350 with real Cherry Bomb glass packs and full 2" exhaust, no crossover. It
sounded great at idle, and when you cranked it up it sounded like a dirt track stock car, and especially cool when decelerating in gear using the motor.

A short glass pack (like the Cherry Bomb) will have less sound attenuation than a long one, so they can really make a stock cam sound tough. It really can't sound like a ricer no matter what you do, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Even though I mentioned them, I do not like glaspacs. They are loud, they pop, and they backfire on deceleration. They also absorb moisture from condensation (they are packed with fiberglass, thus their name) and get heavier years after year. But, it is because of their sound that people like them, like my Son which is why they are on the Gremlin.

I like Turbo Mufflers. Great sound, good rumble, no popping, and there is no drone like what often accompanies Flowmasters. That's what's on my Newport.

But, as you can see, there are as many opinions on this subject as there are members on this site. If you can, attend a local show. When you hear a car you like ask the owner what he/she is using for exhaust. It will help. A friend of mine put Dynaflows on his 318 powered '69 Charger. Sounds great!

Here is a short clip of the Gremlin - you can hear it. The pacs were "Purple Horneys" we had cut down and installed. I'm the fat guy in the video.

I like the Hooker Areochambers too on my 360 with a mild eddy cam! I went from dumped flowmasters(to loud and droney) to magnaflows (to quiet at idle for me), to Hookers and never looked back! They have a good mean sound at idle and wot without the flowmaster drone.

My buddy also put some on his 454 SS chevy truck, they sound great on it!

I have the freeflow manifolds and 2 1/2 inch pipes going into dual outlet Warlok Racing mufflers with twin RaceReady electric cutouts.  Nice rumble closed up  and very loud when the cutouts are open.

They sound mean as all get out when you romp down on it, but no drone, and a nice rumble at idle.

Back in the day, we ran a Cherry Bomb glass pack on a single exhaust, and dual Thrush mufflers.  I'm talking late '60's/early '70's here.  From about '72, guys ran Cyclone "Purple Hornies" with factory downturns bolted to their header collectors.

Nowadays, give me a good low-restriction turbo muffler.  I just don't go for that Jap-car "fart-can" muffler sound.
Buzzman72...void where prohibited, your mileage may vary, objects in mirror may be closer than they appear, and alcohol may intensify any side effects.

would be cool if there was a specific thread where members would/could post a video with sound and list the engine, cam, manifolds/headers, exhaust pipe dia, mufflers, details etc. This would help other members decide on what they like or do not like and can design their system based on what they hear.
