Swapping out of my 1966 American 220 Sedan original broken 199/auto. Have a good used '66 232/auto from '66 American 440. My 220 sedan has original AMC 15 rear with the big nut prop shaft. I believe I read from earlier thread that the 232/auto used a different front & rear yoke and prop shaft?
Is there a way to use current AMC 15 axle with the 232/auto? Will the front yoke from the 199/auto fit the 232/auto? Any other options? I have 1966 American AMC 20 Twin Grip for car in storage. Looking for best solution. Thanks! |

IIRC the only difference is that the pinion with the big nut does not have a 1/2-20 hole for the bolt that the 232 yoke is fastened with.

The AMC 15 shaft won't work on the AMC 20. That said, there are a lot of conversion universal joints available that will make what you want to do work. Check at a NAPA store. They have them. The u-joint will have the smaller caps used on the AMC 15 on one part of the cross and the larger ones used with the 232 on the other. For normal driving there should be no problem with strength. Those joints were originally made for Jeep swaps, I think. You'll need the new driveshaft so you can measure both u-joints and get the correct conversion joint.
Keith is correct as far as I know. There is no threaded hole for a bolt to hold the rear yoke to the pinion shaft on the "big nut" axle. You can't drill the hardened pinion shaft and tap it easily though. Oh, the u-joint is a bit larger for 232 powered cars too, as I indicated above. |

Thanks Frank and Keith for the replies.
So to summarize: 1) 232/auto uses different yoke at trans? 2) "Big nut" Prop shaft will work with 232/auto but will need to check Napa for a trans front yoke conversion U-joint? We are ready to pull broken original 199/auto out of car. Not sure if I can get the prop shaft removed at the rear axle. So when removing engine/trans I can leave prop shaft connected at rear axle and just slip off front yoke from trans to pull powertrain out as a unit? Thanks. |

Right. All the 65 232s used a different rear axle, only the 196 (pre 66) and 199 (66 only) powered cars used the "big nut" shaft.
