I understand not saving it. Short of saving it, you could try to document it and whatever odd ball parts were used. I'm curious what the shifter looks like. As far as the Top Loaders strength, that depends on what version it is. Which first gear it has will tell you a lot, but I believe there was also different cases which varied in strength. Top Loaders were used behind big block Fords, so the right one would be as strong, or stronger than a T-10. This is a good resource and knowledge base for Top Loaders http://www.davidkeetoploaders.com/ Mark the shafts, spin it in first gear and see what the ratio is, I'm very curious what gears they chose for that tractor engined sports car Good luck |

Since it's a T-170 look for info on the strength of that. All 72+ six bells will bolt to a V-8, but AMC used the SR4 four speed behind the 304 in the 79 Spirit based AMX. That was just adequate for the six! The anemic stock 79 304 wasn't too powerful, but do any hop-up work and you'd be changing the trans shortly. The SR4 didn't hold up too well behind an aggressively driven stock six.
The bell will likely be either 6.5" deep (standard AMC six) or 8" deep (standard AMC V-8. Could be different because it's VAM -- they may have made a special bell for it (though I doubt it). Doesn't matter as long as you keep the two together though. |

That's pretty cool, thanks for posting it. it uses the three speed shifter plate on the console. looks like the shifter location is pretty close to the T-10's location too, I was wondering where it would pop through. I've thought about using a Top Loader in my Javelin, since wider ratios are more available, and they bolt right to most 6.5" bells. As long as it doesn't have a really deep first gear I would run it behind a 401. It's only when you get around a 3.00:1 first gear that I would worry about that transmissions strength and ability to handle torque. |
