Can't answer your question. But you can use the 196 crossmember in your 64 Classic if you build small pedestals to adapt the 232 engine to the crossmember. The P.O. of my Classic did it. Joe

The 65 and 66 cross members are different in that the engine perches are farther back by probably about 2". The 65's and 66's are longer cars. I don't know if the cross member it self will bolt in. If it does maybe you could put a 1/4" plate over the perches and re-drill the holes. The one to copy would be from the 64 2 dr hard top with a 232. Was it called the Typhoon? It would be nice if someone was selling weld on perches for the 63's and 64's.

The 232 engine was introduced in a mid year 1964 Rambler Classic model called the Typhoon. That is the good news as it will fit. Bad news I'm not sure what all the factory did to get the engine to fit. The 65 and 66 Classics are different cars but it should be that big a deal. I will note the the 196s last year of real use was 1965 , so any 1965 with a 196 out side of an American is pretty rare. Not necessarily valuable , but pretty rare. The Americans got the last of the 196s in either favor , flat head or OHV. The 232 worked so well the 196s met a rather quick exit after the 232 were introduced. LRDaum

According to the 60-65 Parts book
10 is the model number for Classic
80 is Ambassador
Crossmember 64-65 10 232 LAC(Less AC), and 65 10 199 LAC use 317 3677
64 -65 10 232 WAC and 65 10 199 WAC use 317 6322
The 65 80(ambassador) used a diff crossmember than the Classic with a 232, as the wheelbase was several inches longer than the Classic
Now if you were going with a 287 or 327 both Classic(10) and Ambo (80) used the same crossmember from 63-65
I'm sure 66 is the same, just didn't dig out my 66 parts book to compare

I'm confused because I thought the 63'3 and 64's were shorter than the 65's and 66's.
64 Classics came with the 196. When you put a 232 in a 64 Classic the engine mounts sit over the center of the cross member or even a bit forward. I have a cross member from a 66 with a 232 and the perches/gussets are welded on so that the engine mounts are situated a bit behind the center of the cross member.

'63-'66 Classics are all the same 112" wheelbase and even though they have different styling they're structurally the same underneath. It's the '65-'66 Ambassador that is longer ahead of the firewall.

i stuffed a 1970 232ci six into my 63 classic. i had to install a 64? front crossmember, but then drill the holes for the engine mount studs an inch back (or forward, i forget). easily done. otherise it was drop-in.
then i stuffed a 65 flush-o-matic and torque tube behind that. |
