i have two rear ends, one out of a 73 jav and one out of a 74 amx.. both had 304's in them.. i understand that there is ZERO market for these as an assy.  so i am thinking of maybe stripping any good parts from them and then scrapping the housings.  so other than the axles and backing plates, are there any other parts that i should save?

Thanks Folks

I completely under stand....I save the shims for the axles, pinions, axle assy with matching hub, rear covers, original bolts, yoke...all gear sets and ring gear bolts.  I build a lot of rears, that is why I save these parts...but you are right not a lot of value.  I would buy a set of 2.87 gears for "cheap" or trade for something you need....I can't find the NOS set I have stashed right now!!! ARG

Back in the day I could sell a "one legger", but the 8.8 Ford is so easy to swap no one wants to bother. I scrapped several coil spring rears a few years ago...just robbed the usable small parts....hate it but can't keep everything.

count the ring teeth and pinion teeth and divide. It should also be stamped om the gear set. keep the sets together.

"Count teeth"

You should find one of these:

11 Pinion Teeth mated to 39 Ring Gear Teeth = 3.54 Ratio
13 Pinion Teeth mated to 41 Ring Gear Teeth = 3.15 Ratio
15 Pinion Teeth mated to 43 Ring Gear Teeth = 2.87 Ratio

2.87 is most common behind one leg auto's from 70's AMC's

It is impostanat to keep the ring gear with its mating pinion...they are set marked for "factory manufacturing tolerances".  They are "etched" with a a Carbide Electric Pen number (done by hand) with a number like 23 for instance then another number like +3 or -5......that number is used in the calculations to set the pinion height.   If you have a Factory TSM, that will show exactly what I am talking about.

I just put my Jav rear in the shop for a gear change, I would have loved to have a complete spare rear end to build up and put the original factory one away just in case I ever want to change back to stock. It's a lot easier to change the complete rear axle than it is to change the gears out.

Surely plenty of options to put an aftermarket locker in if you need to spin both wheels.
