I am trying to find out how much transmission fluid I need to put into my 1968 AMC Rebel 770 6 cylinder 3.8 engine.  Dont want to overfill it.  THANKS!

That is what the dipstick is for. When you check it, when its close, put small amounts in, but if the transmisdion is empty, put about 4-5 in before you start it. Once you start it put 3-4-5 quarts in, then.statt checking. Do you have a 1968 TSM? It may tell you how many quarts it holds

TSM says 9.5 qts max. Do you have a transmission dipstick?

yes it has a dipstick.  we are going to do a fluid change.  i dont think we will need to put all 9 quarts in cause all of the fluid wont come out.  we were hoping someone would have an idea of how much new fluid it will hold.  i guess we will just put in a couple and start checking it unless you have a better idea?

When you drop the pan, measure how much fluid is in it. That will give you a ballpark figure to go by, but if its low, well........

As Purple said, put some in until full on dipstick, start the car and cycle through the gears. Fluid levels will drop and ad more until full.
