Specifically, 1982 258, what is the CORRECT napa "select" oil filter number?
For that matter, what are the correct GOOD filters?

This NAPA select filter I got is a much smaller diameter, but otherwise "would fit".

Wait - would a filter for a 1987 Jeep comanche fit an 82 engine? I think I have one left.............

BTW - idiot light goes off when engine starts, but rally gauge wasn't reading anything really. So I pulled the sender and screwed in a mechanical pressure gauge. If you went to about 2500 RPM it might hit 25 psi, otherwise, it was just off 0. HOWEVER, this is like a 500 pound transmission gauge, so not really accurate at lower pressures.
Smelled of gas when I drained oil.
Gas on outside of fuel pump.
We know what that means...................

I think the change was either in late 86 or 87....they went to the smaller filter.....the engine in
my Spirit is from a 87 Eagle and it has the smaller filter.....I did not know they changed
the filter thread size... I put one of the older filters on it and it blew it off.......

I was wrong..............Rock Auto.....

car Eagle/Concord 4.2 changed in 1982... new 51522 ..
Jeep 4.2 changed in 1980 to the 51522 filter.....

Jeep 1979 and older... Car  1981 and older 51258 same as a V8....

Commanche ( and pretty much any other remaining AMC) should be metric thread. Renault had to leave their mark.

They gave me a 91522 but the "can" is a fraction of the diameter of the one I pulled off. Standard filter wrench fit the old, it takes a foreign car wrench on the new.  It just seemed so small compared to the one I took off!

Looks like that means the 79 engine I have sitting here, and the 80 engine from the 80 Eagle wagon take a different filter.

geesh, a filter for the Jav 390, a filter for the 82 eagle, and a filter for the 80 wagon. Hey, it's AMC - one filter should have fit them all! Wink

I use Purolater.  But, might start getting the store brand filters thru Parts America as they are rebranded WIX filters which is also what NAPA uses on their better store branded filters.
